SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER

Preferred Qualifications

1. Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate.  Postsecondary education or completion of interpreter training program preferred.
2. Achieved the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level 3 certification from the National registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or have a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) written test along with a minimum of a Level 3.5 on the EIPA Performance Test or any other state qualification or National Certification (excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation) recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as equivalent to or exceeding the VQAS Level III.
3. Educational interpreting experience preferred.
4. Demonstrated ability in sign language interpreting, other expressive and receptive skills.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. To interpret for the assigned student(s).
2. To facilitate communication as accurately as possible without editing the message for interjecting personal opinion.
3. To communicate the student’s signed message in English when voice interpreting.
4. To provide interpreting for students in classrooms, field trips, assemblies, counseling sessions, club meetings, extracurricular activities, IEP meetings, and other educational settings.
5. To function as a member of the educational team for hearing-impaired students.
6. To notify the classroom teacher of any problems that may hinder the interpreting process.
7. To follow state and federal mandates regarding services for hearing-impaired students.
8. Performs other job-related duties as required by immediate supervisors.
